a sword will pierce your heart ...

How did she feel
when the angel gave her the message
that she was to bear a child ?

How did she feel
as the baby grew within her
- the kicks and squirms that kept her awake
and wouldn't let her forget ?

How did she feel
when her body had had enough
and pushed out its precious burden
into a draughty outhouse with farm animals looking on ?

How did she feel
as tiny lips tugged at her breast
and tiny fingers encircled her thumb ?

Those feelings, whatever they were,
would remain with her,
deep within her own heart.
Did they flood back, to overwhelm and engulf,
when she stood and watched him die ? -
when she had held his body one last time ?
She had once endured pain to bring life into the world.
Could this, the pain of his death, do the same ?
